Error- Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found.

Question

I take photos with my new Iphone 12 mini, and download them onto my Imac. When I go to oepn them in Photoshop I get the error message, "Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found." I am running Catalina 10.15.7. I can open other files like png, etc. I get around this problem by screenshotting them as a png. Do I need to update my operating system? How do I fix this?

Windows users need to download support files from the Microsoft website to open HEIC files, but you are on a Mac and don't have to do that.

Instead you can follow these steps from the Adobe website:

Using HEIC files on Photoshop for Mac

To open your HEIC file, go to Edit and Preferences, then select Camera Raw.
Click on the File Handling tab.
In the JPEG and TIFF Handling box, choose Automatically open JPEGs and HEICs with settings or Automatically open all supported JPEGs and HEICs from the drop-down menu.
You can then open and edit your HEIC files like normal.
