Error- Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found.

I take photos with my new Iphone 12 mini, and download them onto my Imac. When I go to oepn them in Photoshop I get the error message, "Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found." I am running Catalina 10.15.7. I can open other files like png, etc. I get around this problem by screenshotting them as a png. Do I need to update my operating system? How do I fix this?

Windows users need to download support files from the Microsoft website to open HEIC files, but you are on a Mac and don't have to do that.

Instead you can follow these steps from the Adobe website:

Using HEIC files on Photoshop for Mac

  1. To open your HEIC file, go to Edit and Preferences, then select Camera Raw.

  2. Click on the File Handling tab.

  3. In the JPEG and TIFF Handling box, choose Automatically open JPEGs and HEICs with settings or Automatically open all supported JPEGs and HEICs from the drop-down menu.

  4. You can then open and edit your HEIC files like normal.

Are they HEIC files?
Photoshop isn't capable of opening them (Yet?)
it's proprietary file format for the Iphones

If that's the case, check here :
https://www.imore.com/how-take-jpeg-pictures-ios-11-instead-heif

or convert them to JPEG directly on your computer:

  1. Use the Preview app to open the HEIC image.
  2. From the top menu, select File and then Export.
  3. You will see a Format drop-down menu. ...
  4. Give your new JPG photo a name and choose where you want to save it.
  5. Click Save, and you're done.

Hope it helps!

Yes, I think they are! So why to they use .JPG as the extension? Photoshop 2022 can read them, you just have to change the extension to .heic.
