Here in Ps I couldn't understand what "Mask" means and it confuses me. Literal meaning for masking is covering. Covering is not done here by masking. Is there any figurative meaning here?

Adding to what Dave said, your mask is white. Try this:

  • Type "D" to confirm that your foreground and background swatches are pure black and white
  • Type "X" to switch colors and confirm that black is the foreground color
(there are also icons next to the colors to do both of these)
  • Type "B" to select your Brush tool (or click to select it in the Tools panel)
Select a size and hardness/softness in the options bar
  • Confirm that the mask is selected, not the image
  • Paint on the mask with black to reveal the dog in the underlying image. Paint with white if you go too far and want to show more of the lion.

Hi,

This may help.

A mask on a layer either reveals the content of that layer, where the mask is painted white, or hides (masks) the content of that layer where the mask is painted black thereby showing the layer(s) below.

If the mask is grey, then a semi transparent effect results.
