Question

Export dimensions not the same as canvas size

Hi there. I'm trying to export a document from Photoshop for printing, and I'd like the document printed in the dimensions that I originally set for the canvas size - 6.55 inches x 6 inches. When I export the image, the dimensions show as 1965 px x 1800 px. I e-mailed the printer place and the guy is telling me that the document I've sent him is currently 27.29 inches x 25 inches and that I need to re-size the document if I want it printed as 6.55 inches x 6 inches. How do I export the document in the canvas size dimensions of 6.55 x 6 inches? Thank you!

  • Go to Image > Image Size.
  • Uncheck Resample.
  • Type 300 in the resolution field.
  • If necessary change measurement unit to inches and you should see 6.55 inches x 6 inches.
  • Go to File > Save As and save file.

That should do the trick.

A 6.55 x 6" image at 300 ppi is 1965 x 1800 pixels.

Change the ppi to 72, and it will print at 27.29 x 25".

When you use Export, it will set the ppi to 72. The pixel dimensions won't change, but the printed size will.

Use Save As instead of Export, and the ppi won't change.

A small correction:

Export doesn't set the ppi to 72, it strips out the ppi number. Export is intended for screen display, where ppi is irrelevant – the image will display according to its pixel dimensions. Ppi is optional metadata that printer drivers use to calculate the printed size. (digital images don't have physical dimensions)

But when the exported image is opened in Photoshop, a ppi number has to be assigned to the image. This number happens to be 72. Sorry for the confusion.

You can use Image>Image Size command

In displayed window enter your destination values in width and Height fields (be sure this size keeps same proportions like oginal)

Also be sure you choose  resample Method - I recomend Bicubic Sharper (reduction) in this case
