faint, tiny red line within my cursor

I have noticed a very thin, short red line which appears within my cursor as I paint, etc.

What is this and how get rid of it?

It sounds like the brush smoothing 'leash'

You can turn it off in Preferences > Cursors

Note: you can also change the colour

It will also disappear when you have brush smoothing disabled
