Question

File extension not changing when saving as a different file type

Hi there

When I work on a PSD file then try to save as JPG or PNG photoshop always says I have to save this new file as a copy, puts 'copy' in the file title and doesn't change the file extension. I have to manually change the file extension, remove the word 'copy' and it saves ok. But I have no idea why this is happening. I have read a few things about 16 bit and 8 bit but changing these doesn't make any difference. I have CS6 on a new iMac with OSX High Sierra 10.13.5. I first noticed this as problem after upgrading to a new iMac a few months ago.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to correct this, could it be an issue with OSX or photoshop.

Many thanks.

Apple does by policy not provide backwards compatibility for legacy software. CS6 is very old and problems can be expected in the new MacOS versions. People have been reporting various small glitches like this for some time.

I'd recommend you upgrade to a current Photoshop version. It's only a matter of time before CS6 will stop working altogether.

Do you have layers in your .psd file?

When you attempt to "save as" .psd file to a .jpg or .png do you see the "Save Options" >> "Save: As a Copy" [checked] below "File name" and "Save as type"?

Do you see a "Warning" button next to "Save" and "Cancel"?

Push the "Warning" button and read.

Photoshop is looking for you to merge your layers down.

Once you do this you can save in the format you want. Just look for the "Warning" button.

Hi there

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Previously if i were working on a PSD file and I wanted to save it as a PNG file photoshop would just save it and photoshop would automatically flatten the image, I never had to to do it manually.  I do see these warning messages with the triangles, and a message saying that 'this file must be saved as a copy' it's as if photoshop wants to add the word 'copy' into the title but it doesn't change the file extension from PSD to PNG (or JPG), even though there is no file with the same name or anything like that. I am accepting its now something I have to do manually.

If this just recently started, corrupt preferences may be to blame.

If you need a quick and dirty way to restore your preferences, here's a way you can do it using a keyboard shortcut on launch:

Windows - double-click the PS icon to start Photoshop

                  Immediately Hold down CTRL-SHIFT-ALT

You will see a delete preferences dialog. Click “yes".

Macintosh - Hold down CMD-SHIFT-OPTION instead.

hi there

thank you for taking the time to reply but this hasn't fixed the problem, it still does exactly as I described in the original post.

Are you updated to 13.0.6?  Help > System Info will tell you. Also be sure to have legacy Java installed.

Download Java for OS X 2017-001
