File recovery help! Clicked "Save" but file did not save, no warning before closing.

Hi everyone,

I had been working on an image for a few hours. I had 2 separate windows open (my reference and my painting). I clicked on the painting window to make sure it was selected and pressed "Save" on the upper toolbar.

The * next to the file name had disappeared so I knew it saved. However, once I double checked the file, it had reverted to its original state from hours ago.

Is there any way to get my work back? Does anyone know what happened to cause this? I have 336 GB of disk space free so it's not a storage issue.
