Question

File > Save or Ctrl+S when working on an edited PNG prompts me to save as PSD instead of overwriting

So my problem is similar to this older thread: https://community.adobe.com/ but the solution there I already have set. My crop tool is checked for "Delete Cropped Pixels" and still, it's about a 50/50 when working on my folder of PNG files, that sometimes it will overwrite when I try to Save (expected behavior) but other times it will open the dialogue box for saving as a PSD and this is not what I want. So I have to end up going through "File > Export > Quick Export as PNG" and overwriting the file that way. Just give me a simple Save... I opened that file... let me save that file...

JPEG requires a flattened image, only a single special Background image "layer", 8 bpc and no alpha channels.

PNG allows a single floating layer for transparency.

You need to compare the state of the PNG when it wishes to save as PSD vs a different PNG that will directly save, as there is something in there that doesn't satisfy the PNG requirements. Otherwise Save As a Copy or Legacy Save As will generally bypass such roadblocks and allow you to save as directly to PNG (apart from 32 bpc mode).

I am making Discord Stickers of an Angel character. I opened the PNG (which was this image but had a background) and removed the background. It's only 1 layer with Transparency. But PNG supports Transparency. When I hit Ctrl+S (or File > Save) it prompts me to save as a PSD. There's no weird layer properties, blending mode is Normal, there should be nothing here that isn't compatible with PNG.

Have you checked the channels panel to ensure there are no additional channels from the selection process when you removed the background?

That means the file has some property that isn't supported by the PNG format.

I replied to the person below you, but the information in it should apply to your message too. I don't see anything that isn't compatible with PNG...

@Ayelwen

I saved a flattened PNG.

Opened it again. Unlocked the Background layer. Added a layer mask to create transparency...

When using save, the dialog poped up defaulting to PSD, however, PNG was also available.

When I applied/deleted the layer mask to lock in the transparency and pressed save, no dialog was presented and the file saved to PNG.

Conclusion:

The layer mask isn't supported by PNG – but the result of the applied layer mask is supported (transparency, single layer) .

P.S. I know that your screenshot doesn't have a layer mask, I'm just reporting on my test.
