File size changes when re-opening a jpg in Photoshop 2021

After working on a file in PS and saving that file as a jpg, if I re-open that same jpg file later, it opens at a much smaller file size than the previously saved file. For example, an 18 MB file reopens at 3.81 MB. Consequestly, I cannot re-edit the file. Please help. Thanks

Hi Jane-e,

Further to our exchange yesterday regarding PS, the problem lies within Camera Raw Preferences settings. If the "resize to fit" box is checked in CR Preferences, then when the original jpg file is re-opened, this CR setting forces the file to open at a specified (smaller) size/resolution. I don't know how my box got checked but there it is. In any case, I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to try to address my problem.

Cheers,

Lionel

The original file most likely has ancestory metadata attached AKA "file bloat" - you don't want that, so the new, smaller file size is proper.

On Mac, when I save a file after it has been edited, I cannot open that jpg file at it's saved size/resolution. Example, I saved a file that was 18 MB  and when I re-opened it later, it was 3.81 MB. Consequently I cannot further edit the file later.

Again: What kind of edits do you need to do that you can't?

Where are you looking at those numbers? In Mac Finder / Windows File Explorer? Or in the lower left hand corner?

What kind of edits do you need to do that you can't?
