Question

Filter Gallery Available But not Working

I am trying to learn the Photograph-to-Watercolor process. I seem to have full access to the Filter Gallery, but I don't see any "Preview" in the Gallery, and when I click "ok", nothing happens. (My photo is not changed, and no "Filter Gallery" Smart Filter appears under my "Smart Object". Everything works perfectly under the "Filter" Menu (Guassian blur, oil paint, etc). It is only the Filter Gallery that appears completely disconnected/disabled. I have checked the basic issues, My photo is 8-bit 5 bit, RGB, Pixelated, and Converted to a Smart Object. I updated PS, and restarted my Computer. Can anyone help me solve my problem? Thank you for your time in advance!

[Edit from moderator: changed "5 bit" to "8-bit"]

Hi Nancy,

Thank-you for your reply, and great visual example.  I was working on a copy layer, that was not locked. Can I add smart filters to a "Regular" layer? I just discovered my problem, the "eye" was not turned on in the filter gallery, but I am very glad to learn about your simple method to create a beautiful watercolor effect.

Have a great evening!

Are you working with a locked background layer?

Double click to unlock layer and name it Original.

Ctrl + J to duplicate layer.

With topmost layer selected, apply Filter Gallery.

Repeat as needed.

In this example, no Smart Objects were used.  I stacked filtered layers (Spatter & Watercolor) & adjusted opacity to produce an impressionistic effect.

Correction...that should be "8-bit".
