find the color values of a layer in photoshop

I am not a full time photoshop user, I merely work from client designs.

I find it very frustrating that I cannot seem to find the color values of a layer in photoshop, for some reason certain layers do not seem to show the color of the shape on them or the color applied to the layer.

For example this overlay layer, I just want to know what the base hex color is, I cannot find it anywhere.

Thanks Graham

Hi

Go to the eyedropper tool and in the options bar set it to current layer

Now select your layer and click on the foreground swatch to open the color picker.

Use the eyedropper in the color picker to click on your colour in the image. The settings above will mean that it will pick up only the wanted layer colour.

Now the warning - you do realise that the hex values mean precisely nothing without the context of a colour space? The same color can have different values in different colour spaces and conversely the same hex values represent different colours in different colour spaces. That is something the websites showing colours fail to tell you (most refer to colours in the sRGB color space).
