First Alt + Tab after closing all documents does not switch away from Photoshop (Windows)

I'm on Windows 10 with Photoshop 19.0 (can't upgrade to latest because it requires some Windows update that I don't have and corporate IT haven't installed yet).

This has been irritating me subconsciously for ages but I've just realised what it is. Not sure if this is just me or common to everyone, but here's what happens:

1. Open Photoshop

2. Open an image

3. Close the image (so there are no open documents and you have just the application and previous document thumbnails)

4. Alt + Tab

5. It gives me Photoshop again (because the Photoshop window is the first open in the Alt + Tab window)

That should switch you to the previous app: so if I opened a file from File Explorer, edited, saved, then alt + tab should take me back to file explorer. It doesn't though: the first alt + tab window is Photoshop in this case, so Alt + Tab doesn't do anything (the window flickers and it looks like you're switching apps, but you're switching to the same app)

If I have a document open in Photoshop and Alt + Tab, the first window is the previous app, as it should be.

Does this happen for anyone else? If so I'll make a bug report.

minimize All apps (win key + D or M )

and try switching between apps forward  ( alt + tab ) or backward (alt + shift + tab )

Hi Mohammad: thanks for the reply. Not sure why you're suggesting minimising everything first, however I get the same result with the first alt+tab. If I do alt+shift+tab it works as it should, I think.

Maybe a better way of explaining it is that normally when you hold alt and press tab, the selector pops up and the second thumbnail is highlighted. The first thumbnail is your current app, and the second one is the one you were in last. However, if I've closed a Photoshop document and have the empty Photoshop window up (as distinct from opening Photoshop and not opening a document: you have to have had a document open and closed it) when I do alt+tab, the first thumbnail (i.e. Photoshop) is selected, not the second one. So the result is that I "switch" from Photoshop to Photoshop, which is not what I want.

It's almost as if by opening a document and closing it, the focus shifts away from Photoshop (not sure to where) and thus when you alt+tab, it switches back to Photoshop from wherever it was.

It feels like a bug to me, but I want to check if this is what everyone else on Windows 10 gets.
