Flatten layers without losing effect

Hi,

I'd like to know weather there is a solution to save a PSD document with some layers under another file type (such as .JPEG) without losing effect when layers are flattened ? Each time I want to flatten some layers with different blending modes, I get a very different effect that is unwanted. Thank you in advance for your precious help !

Best regards

    Hi

Flattening does not normally make a drastic change provided you are viewing before and after at 100% zoom. Other zoom levels are blended using previews and you may well see a change.

If you are seeing this before and after at 100%, post your layers panel (or better an example file, and we may be able to help you better

What I do when this happens is to add a Copy merged layer to the top of the stack.

Select the top most layer (it must be be turned on) and Shift Cltr Alt E — Shift Cmd Opt E

It will then flatten without any change in appearance.

Chris Cox did once explain why and how this could happen, but I am buggered if I can remember, and my lazy method works so that's what I do.

The preview Photoshop creates can use downsampled cache-imagery to increase speed (unless a certain Preferences setting is set).

So the effect of the Layers, BlendModes etc. may not calculated at the full image resolution but downsampled stand-ins, which can for example result in grey pixels being adjusted when actually there are only black and white pixels which would not be affected.

I had a discussion with Noel Carboni a few months ago where he explained exactly that. It does beg the question as to whether such preview blending is needed with modern graphics cards and high speed processors.

I assume you do not view the image at View > 100% when flattening.

Thank you so much for your answer. For the moment, I don't know if it solves my problem but I suppose it does. Thank you all of you anyway.
