Frequent system crashes when using Photoshop
Hi there,
I am having trouble with frequent system crashes while using Photoshop on an XP-Pen Artist 24 Pro. It's hampered my work over the last few weeks so any advice or suggestions would be really appreciated 😄 Here are the details -
I use Photoshop for drawing cartoons in a document with multiple layers. After typically 10-40 minutes, my system will suddenly reboot. This always occurs while interacting with Photoshop, and usually occurs while drawing on the screen with a pen using the Brush tool. Sometimes the system shows some lag before crashing, while other times the crash occurs out of the blue. There seem to be less frequent crashes when minimising the number of other programs open (e.g. Chrome) but crashes do still occur. (While I could use Ps without any other programs open, this is far from ideal as I need to go back and forth between Photoshop and other programs to put the cartoons into the documents I'm illustrating.)
I've tried re-installing Photoshop using the Creative Cloud App (both without and with resetting preferences), but this didn't help; neither did unchecking "Use Graphics Processor" or clearing the font cache. However, using an earlier version of Photoshop (Photoshop 2022.2.0) and turning down the memory usage to 15000 MB does help - Photoshop hasn't crashed so far (1 hour plus). This makes me wonder whether the problem could be the RAM.
While I'm glad to have a usable version of Photoshop, being stuck on Photoshop 2022 isn't ideal going forwards (the latest version of Photoshop 23 has the same problems as 24 for me). Is there anything else I can try to get a more stable system, or would trying a RAM upgrade be the way to go?
My system:
CPU - Intel Core i7-7820X, 3.60GHz (64-bit)
GPU - GTX 1080 Ti
RAM - 32.0 GB
Main display + Artist 24 Pro pen display
Photoshop is installed on the same SSD as the operating system, which it also uses as a scratch disk; free space over 100 GB
Illustrator works just fine
(The same problems occur when using Ps without any Plug-ins.)
Thanks for your help!
