Gif file won't open in Photoshop CC 2018

I tried to open a gif file to work on it. All of a sudden it doesn't work anymore?

I've always went to 'file' then 'open' and selected the gif I wanted to work on. Now it gives me an error message 'could not complete request because it is not the right kind of document.'

If anyone knows why, or a possibly fix for this that would be awesome!

Hi there,

We apologize for the issue you are facing while trying to open GIF files in Photoshop.

Would you mind sharing some more information :

  1. The version of Photoshop you are using by going to the Help menu and selecting System Info.
  2. Are you using a Mac or a Windows computer? (The operating system version would also be helpful)
  3. The GIF you are trying to open, have you created that yourself or have you downloaded the file from somewhere?
  4. Are you facing the same issue with all GIF files you are trying to open?

Also, since you are currently using Photoshop 2018, please try updating the application to the latest version through the Creative cloud desktop application to check if you face the same issue with the latest version.

You may also try to reset the preferences for Photoshop using the steps mentioned in the link below to check if that helps.
