GPU not working in Photoshop 24.1.0 on Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio. Brush Lag

When switching on "Use Graphics Processor" on Photoshop 24.1.0 the GPU is stuck in "Software" mode. This causes extreme lag when drawing with a basic brush. Smoothing is turned off. I'm seeing this on a Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio with Intel Iris Xe Graphics.

The Tools > GPU Compatibility Check states the processor is compatible. No difference switching "Use OpenCL" on or off. I've even reset all preferences to no avail.

I reinstalled the previous version of Photoshop, v23.5.3 and everything works perfectly again. Zero lag when drawing, even with complex brushes. Definitely something related to v24.

Your Intel Iris Xe is compatible but is below the recommended minimum specs to run Photoshop efficiently.

The recommended minimum speed is 2,000 ops/sec and the Xe (not Xe MAX) comes in at 1,400 so I would expect some lag.

As you upgrade your software, requirements increase.

Fair enough though the lag between v23 and v24 is staggering. The other difference I am seeing is that PS v23 runs correctly with the GPU in Dx12 mode while v24 runs in "Software" mode which I believe means Dx11?  I have tried every option and I can not get it out of "Software" mode. Which runs dramatically worse than entirely disabling GPU (but then the gestures stop working... can't pinch to zoom etc)

    Per the link above:

Software rendering is a Windows-only mode that returns to the Direct X 11 renderer. This happens if you explicitly set the Technology Preference, "Older GPU Mode Pre 2016", or if Photoshop determines that the software renderer is required for better stability.

If you don't have that preference set for older GPU modes, then PS is overriding and determining that software is the best option given your hardware setup.

One thing you can try is to make sure your drivers are updated.
