gradient photoshop

I am unable to click and drag a gradient - the icon will not cross the outline of the list of gradients

 

photoshop 2121 latest version with windows 10

You didn't show a screen shot of your Layers and options, so start by resetting the gradient tool: right-click the tool in the options bar (not Tools panel) and Reset. Then confirm that you are on a layer that can accept a gradient.

 

Does it work in a new document?

 

If it still does not work, we need a screen shot of what is happening.
