Having a DIFFERENT problem with "Save-As"

I've been trying to find an answer to my save-as problem but when I search for anwers on this I keep seeing post about a different (although similarly worded) problem.

Example of my problem:

* I was working on a multi layered Image called "New Rates 2024.psdc"

* I wanted to make a one flayer flattened copy of the image to send to some oneone so I hide all the layers I did not want included and merged the document. and did a "Save as" and told it to call that image  "New Rates 2024.png"

* So now I have "New Rates 2024.png" open in photo shop and tried to open my originally saved "New Rates 2024.psdc" so I could work on both of them independantly... BUT the original Multi-Layer "New Rates 2024.psdc" had been saved over with the flattened single layer PNG image.  It was still in the PSDC Format but even though I never saved over the original... when I did a "Save As" it created a new file... AND changed the original in a way that no longer let me undo or revert back to the state prior to the changes.

I am baffled by this... every other program I use... when you do a "Save As" if creates a new document but does not make also "Update" your original... with a totally different name and extention.

My photoshop did not use to do this.   I had to reinstall from creative cloud recently.  I'm wondering if that reset all the preferences or something and you need to change the settings to get it to treat "Save AS the way a microsoft office profram or the like would... of if this is some kind fo glitch.  But it just  wipped out 35 od layers that I know have to rebuild from scratch and I'm not very ahppy about it.

Has anyone had this issue?  Again I'm NOT talking about other peoples problem with save as where they are upset that it's not saving over a file they are trying to replace with an updated version.  My problem is after creating a new version... it's essentually overwritting my original as well.

Pdsc is a cloud document. When you close it, it automatically saves to the state at that point (whether you wanted to save or not). All is not lost though as pdsc also saves and retains versions. So you just need to view the pdsc doc online and choose the version you want to use and continue to work with.

You can't overwrite one file format with a different file format. That would mean actively deleting the original file, and Photoshop doesn't do that without explicit permission.

However, .psdc means you're saving to the cloud, and I'm not familiar with the procedures there. Are you saving one to the cloud and one to local disk?

Hey, @Like_The_Dog. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll help you figure this out.

When working with a Photoshop Cloud Document, using 'Save As' should prompt you to select a location in the cloud or on your computer > the following Window only allows you to save the document as PSD, PSB, TIFF & PDF.

You can use 'Save a copy' to send a Copy of your layered document to various formats. It could be a human error in this case.

For Photoshop Cloud documents, you can check the Versions panel from Window> Versions to find an older version that can be opened in a new tab.

You can mark any versions you would like to keep for longer. Check here to learn more: https://adobe.ly/47KZhIT

Thanks!
