My question is what do the Radius and Threshold sliders actually do, specifically?

I am using Surface Blur on Photoshop for a portraiture image and I'm fiddling around with the sliders (Radius/Threshold) and was wondering what their true dynamics are.

All answers are appreciated, thank you.

    From Adobe's help file:

    Surface Blur

Blurs an image while preserving edges. This filter is useful for creating special effects and for removing noise or graininess. The Radius option specifies the size of the area sampled for the blur. The Threshold option controls how much the tonal values of neighboring pixels must diverge from the center pixel value before being part of the blur. Pixels with tonal value differences less than the Threshold value are excluded from the blur.

So in a basically, the radius is the size of the blur, and the threshold is like a tolerance that determines that if neighboring pixels are close in value, they will get blurred.

One way to get a visual for how radius works - if you open an image in ACR and hold down option / alt while moving the sliders around, you'll get an idea for how it works. It will give you a grayscale preview - I can't show it in the screenshot because I can't take a screenshot while holding down the option key... try it.
