Help! Disable automatic smart object paste?

Hi, a question from someone with pretty basic Photoshop knowledge. When you drag a png image from a Windows folder to your Photoshop workspace, the image automatically lands in Photoshop as a smart object. Is there a way to disable that setting beforehand?
