Help. Jpegs won't open in Photoshop. Default to Windows picture?

Hi.

First up. I have the latest version of Photoshop CC and I am running Windows 10 which was updated a couple of days ago.

Since the Windows 10 update I can't select from a folder of images and have them open in Photoshop by default. Naturally I can open them direct from Photoshop itself. But sometimes I am opening them from My Computer on the desktop. Since the update the Jpegs always open in Windows picture viewer which I don't want. I have tried the option of "Open With" and selecting Photoshop CC and saying that always use this app for opening Jpegs. This has always worked in the past but now it just won't.

Is there a minor adjustment needed in Photoshop or could it be a Windows thing? And any suggestions how I can get around it.

Regards

Carol

Just to confirm, without much investigation, it seems impossible at the moment to change the default app to open photos on Win 10. Properties > Opens with > Change is not accepting changes from my testing. I do not think that it has to do with Photoshop, it is Windows thing.

The solution I can suggest is to use Adobe Bridge instead of Windows Explorer.

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for your replies and suggestions. After much research it seems that Windows 10 is the problem. It has made their Picture Viewer the default and locked out any other option. I have logged a recommendation that they change this. I followed instructions to remove the Windows Photo app which was successful. However JPEGs now default to there Paint 3D app which is even worse. I am not going to go removing anything else in case I corrupt my computer. I will follow up with Windows and hope that the problem is rectified.

I just installed Photoshop CC 2020 and Bridge 2020 yesterday with the Creative Cloud desktop app.  I an running Windows 10 home Version 10.0.17134 build 17134.  I always use Bridge to open files with and it will open them from Bridge with Windows picture viewer which I don't want.  This happens with Jpeg's only not Raw or Tiff files.  I didn't have this problem with Photoshop CC 2019 or Bridge 2019.I don't have a choice to open with or changing my default app to Photoshop CC 2020.  I do have DXO and the NIK Collection installed and do have a choice to open Jpeg's with DXO but would rather use Photoshop CC 2020 to open files with. Any help on this issue would be appreciated. Thanks

I took a look at my old Windows 10 Dell PC and updated it. Running the winver command tells me it's 1803 17134.345, which should be the latest.

Jpegs open up in Photoshop just by double-clicking on them. So perhaps the upgrade corrupted your Photoshop install.

If I were to say anything, I would suggest you download and run the Cleaner Tool as per the instructions here: Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems Then you would download and reinstall Photoshop via the CC Desktop app.

    Hope that works for you.
