In newer Photoshop it can also be change this on windows tool option bar for some tools.  For example the pen tool  option bar and you may find you may also like rubber band mode when using the pen tool. Look for the gear icon in tool bar.

    In the preferences, as long as you have the current Photoshop. What version do you have?
