Help With Layers in Photoshop

Hello,

Quick question here on layers. So when I start working on an image the first thing I do is a command J to make a copy. After that then I will rename that layer say to clone left eye, then I will go in and clone the left eye. Then I will continue to make a copy of that layer and then rename it to what I want to do to it say this one would be remove highlight from glass then i would go in there and remove that highlight. So now I would have my background layer then above that layers named with I want to do to them ( clone, left eye, remove highlight from glass, etc) I'm haveing issues with my layers after I make a change to the layer and then I toggle that layer on and off and I don't see the before and I cannot figure out why? Any advice would be a great help thanks!
