Help with Lens Blur

Hi, is there a way to add to the existing preset shapes for lens blur? I wanted to use a star shape, but I can't figure out if that's possible to add or not; if it matters I'm using the CC version. If not, is there any other way to add a shaped bokeh-type blur to an image of christmas lights? Thanks

Here are some ideas that might help. You might take one or more to create the shape bokeh.

  1. Make a duplicate layer of your image
  2. Apply a fair amount of Gaussian blur
  3. Add a layer mask to the blurred image
  4. Select the Custom Shape Tool
  5. Select the star shape, set the foreground to black, and apply 1 star to a new layer
  6. Use that star to define a brush (Edit > Define Brush Preset…) and hide or delete the layer where you made just 1 star
  7. Set the brush settings (F5) to space it out (Brush Tip Shape) and adjust the size jitter (Shape Dynamics), the scatter (Scattering), and the flow jitter (Transfer)
  8. On the white layer mask, use the brush set to black and paint over areas of light (mainly in the background but you could do part of the foreground, too, depending on the image)
  9. Invert the layer mask (Ctrl + I - PC, Command + I - Mac)
  10. Add a little Gaussian blur to the layer mask
  11. Set the Blend mode of the layer to Screen

Not that I know of.

But have you tried Filter > Blur > Shape Blur?
