Question

High Pass action not performing correctly

User of CC. Photoshop version 21.0.1.

Ok, so I've created an action for when I use high pass to sharpen my images in the end of an editing process. But the action is not doing the job correctly.

Here's the weird thing: When I record the process and create the action, the result is as it should be. But when I play the action afterwards, the result is different. How can this be?

Here's the process step by step:

Cmd+alt+shift+E (merge a copy of all visible layers)

Filter-->Other-->Highpass. Here I enter the value of 52. --> OK.

Cmd+U (to open up a hue/saturation adjustment dialouge) I desaturate the image completely.-->OK.

I ctrl+click on my image and go to Blending Options to open up the Layer Style Dialouge box.

In the "Blend If" sliders I ctrl+click on the slider for This Layer to split the slider in half.

I pull the right part of the slider all the way to the right. -->OK.

I set Blending Mode to Soft Light.

Alt+click on the Add Layer Mask icon to create a mask that is inverted (filled with black)

Now I use my brush to localy paint in the high pass layer in my image.

When I do this "manually" it all works perfectly. And when I do this manually while I record the action, it also works perfectly. But when I play the action, the result is completely different. It looks like the blending mode is actually set to hard light instead of soft light. The effect of the high pass filter is sort of exaggerated and not as subtle as I intend it to be.

This has never been a problem before, but then I got a new computer and started using photoshop CC, and I wanted to record my old highpass action again. And now I'm in hell, because it just doesn't make sense for an action not to do exactly what is recored when creating it.

FYI: When creating the action I create a short cut: cmd+shift+F6.

F6 is also a short cut for opening Colors in my Panels menubar. Can this be creating the problem?

I really hope someone can help me figure this out.

Thanks so much.

Check on 21.0.2.
It seems they were fixing something there.

High pass sucks. Google for "Frequency Separation" and use that instead, its a much better way to sharpen images.
