History/Art History Brush Painting White, help?

Hello,

I can't find an answer to this online.  I'm trying to use the Art History Brush.  I've Masked a cat, and Merged the cut out cat onto a blank layer that I'd painted white.  I added a new layer to paint on with the Art History Brush but it's painting white rather than cloning the image from below.  Does anyone know why this is happening?

If I try to use the Art History brush before Merging down onto a white layer I get the below error message.

D'oh! yup that was the problem.  I didn't have the merged layer ticked in the History section.  That's for pointing that out.

Please post screenshots inclusing ALL the pertinent Panels, History would appear to be one in this case.

What was that particular Layer’s content in the selected History Snapshot?
