I have a log in png format and I need to remove the black background so the logo rests on a transparent background an can be inserted universally regardless of background on the document.

If the layer is locked, trash the lock.

Double click on the Layer in the Layers Panel to bring up Layer Style

In Blend If at the bottom of Layer Style slowly slide the top left slider to the right until the black disappears

    Hello,

to unlock the layer (or to "trash the lock") you just double click on the locker icon in the layer palette. Photoshops removes the locker icon and renames the layer from "Background" to "layer 0". You can as well select the black pixels with the magic wand and then delete them. Maybe you need to smoothen the edges.
