Question

How change the name of a smart filter?

I sometimes convert a layer to a smart object.  And may have more than one smart filter - for example, doing a blur gallery tilt-shift and a blur gallery field blur, and maybe a gaussian blur for 50px and another for 150.  So I may have several smart filters and want to enable some and disable others.

It would be a lot more productive if I could give each of the smart filters a more descriptive name than the default, but I can't find how to change the name...

How do I change the name of the individual smart filters?

I think that is not possible at current and frankly I do not consider this to be a desirable option.

Just imagine getting a file from someone else and not a single smart filter is identifyable in the Layers Panel because they renamed them all.

I figured it wouldn't be possible, but thought it worth asking.

As for not being desirable, I disagree.   I'm not sure why I would ever give someone else a file to edit, and it's a lot easier to know which filter(s) to turn on an off if they say "tilt-shift" or "field blur" instead of all of them being named something generic like "Blur Gallery".

But, if it can't, it can't.

»I'm not sure why I would ever give someone else a file to edit«

Do you work with Photoshop professionally?

Because in my experience it seems pretty common that one has to hand off or receive files from other people.

Even if you refuse to give your layered files to customers it might be necessary to entrust them to some colleague for further editing in cases like holidays, sickness etc.

Then we are not talking about the ability to rename Smart Filters in the Layers Panel but that this particular group of Filters lacks clear naming in the Layers Panel?

In that case I would have to concur.

You could post an »Idea« (basically a Feature Request) and hopefully get some support and maybe feedback from an Adobe employee.
