Question

How do I apply the Directional Lighting filter to an Alpha channel?

I've watched and read about using the Directional Lighting filter to create a stonework texture in photoshop.

In ever example of this, I am suppose to create a smartlayer with the Clouds filter, then create an Alpha channel with the Difference Clouds filter.  This is no problem.

But once I try to use the Directional Lighting filter on the Alpha channel, it won't let me select it.  I can select either Red, Green, or Blue channels just fine, but this won't complete the tutorial.

Any advice would be most appriciated.

Thank you.

Unfortunately, Adobe is removing 3D from photoshop and that includes Lighting Effects so none of the 3D stuff works very well or at all.

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/3d-faq.html

You can download photoshop 22..2 from your Adobe Creative Cloud Application for working 3D including Lighting Effects.

Ah, thank you for pointing out the problem.

I'll try and download the earlier version so I can get the program to do what I need.

Thank you for all your help.

Is this the tombstone exercise in Photoshop Classroom in a Book? What version of the book do you have?

No, it's a youTube tutorial.

But thank you for your quick reply.

What version of photoshop are you using?

Can you give us a link to the tutorial?

Usually one uses an Alpha channel as a Texture for one of your layers when using Lighting Effects.

Here is the link to the tutorial I am using: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JM7ZKk-94ko&ab_channel=PhotoshopTutorialsbyWebflippy

I just updated it prior to trying the tutorial; it is 25.3.1 release if that helps.

Thank you for your prompt reply.
