Question

How do I change the workspace background?

I need to change the background (white-gray squares) to black to clearly see whether I have cropped the object properly. In AE, this is switched in one click. How can I do this in Photoshop without creating layers with a black fill? Just set the background to be not transparent by default, but always black. Thank you.

For a new document you set the background color in the New Document dialog. This is a sticky setting that becomes your new default.

A new layer will always be transparent.

To quickly change a layer to full black, you need to use the standard shortcuts. Ctrl+A (select all), D (default swatches, black foreground and white background), Alt+Delete (fill with foreground color).
