how do i make a transparent bw image

If you look at the 2 images attached the 1st has a grey block and image below has already been amended, but how is it done. taking a standard image making in transparent and b/w. So what dropped over grey block you get the result like the 2nd attached image

Bitmap mode 1 bit lineart/binary I images are treated as having white as transparent, with the black accepting colour fill in Illustrator or InDesign.

 

If the image is contone 8/16 bits, then as suggested blend modes such as multiply or darken would make white transparent.

I would experiment with diferent blend modes and opacity levels.

I am not really understanding your question, but my biggest issue is that your screen shots are way too small to make sense of.  If possible can you show us MUCH larger images, and mabe have another go at describing what you would like to achieve?

 when you place the image on the page (image with wavey lines) over the grey box, you can see through it

Hi, switch the blending mode to Multiply.
