How do I see a temporary 'grid' in Photoshop to help me align things in an image?

I suppose I could draw a grid and paste as a layer but then would have to see the layer over the top of the layer I want to work on and that would not work. Is there a way to make a grid visible and still be able to work on my base layer at the same time? I want to check to see that things are in alignment.
