How do I set the move key to move items on a layer WITHOUT needing the command key?

Tryinbg to restore behaviors in Photoshop as the final stages of recovery from deleted preferences. I used to be able to move an item on a layer by just pressing down with the move tool and dragging, but now I have to also press the command key to get the item to move... this is a fine point but will restore behaviors that have been set in place over the years. TIA, for help as I recover these behaviors... Ken

You didn't say if you are selecting a layer first — or not.

Can you look in the options bar for the Move tool and see what you have for  the Auto-Select checkbox? Try unchecking it if it's checked or vice-versa.

Yes, The layer is selected. I will try the other options you selected.
