Hi Catherine (catherinemary2012),

I imagine you already found out how to unlock brushes, but I'll share what worked for me. I had the same issue while trying to create a new brush shape and then edit it.  After some poking around I tried selecting the "Brush Tool" icon on the menu to the left side of my work area before trying to edit my brush shape.  After selecting the "Brush" icon, the "Brush" and "Brush Presets" became active and the brushes were able to be locked or unlocked. Also, I don't think you are impolite .

Catherine, it is considered impolite to shout at folk with a huge blocky font. [ fixed by admin ]

The only way I can think of brushes as being 'locked' is if you were unable to save edits to brush sets because the file was 'Read Only'.

What operating system are you using?  If I am right with the last paragraph, then you need to find the location of the brushes (.abr files) select them all, right click, and if Read only is checked, uncheck it.

If have misunderstood your question, then can you try again with mode detail please?
