Hi,

If I have a flat character image and want to use it as a puppet, does photoshop separate each part into separate layers? How is it done? Thanks

    1. Select the area you want to have on its own layer with one of the selection tools (Marquee, Lassos, Magic Wand, or Quick Selection tool)

    2. In the options panel choose "Select & Mask" Button if you need to clean the selection up.

    3. If you are in the "Select & Mask" Dialog box you can choose a new layer or a layer with a layer mask (Suggest a new layer)

    4. If you have a selected area on a layer you can choose Layer>New Layer via Copy or Layer>New Layer via Cut (Suggest copy)

(If you are doing this for Character Animator make sure you use one of the files from Adobe because there are specific elements you need to separate and specific way you need to name them to read automatically into Character Animator!)

I am doing a YouTube series on photoshop starting from a photo. I am not a photoshop expert, but hopefully useful. It’s called project wookie. https://extra-ordinary.tv/2018/10/22/project-wookie-a-beginner-youtube-playlist/

Episodes 1 and 25 might be interesting. Episode 1 shows masking out the background of a photo. Episode 25 shows splitting artwork into multiple layers - it makes the arms independent.
