Question

How to disable auto crop image when opening

Photoshop 25.3.1. in windows

I shoot Canon in CR3. When I open a 2:3 image in Photoshop it automatically crops to 16:9. Therefore I loose al lot of information at the top and botem of the image.

The most common awnser I found was to disable "enable crop pre-selection" in the preferences menu. But I don't have that option in the new release.

Kind people of the internet, do you know a solution?

Did you checked File > Scripts > Script Events Manager just in case?

There is a good chance that the 16:9 crop is set in the camera menus.

The raw file image will contain the 3:2 full frame data, but Camera Raw and the Lightroom Apps 'obey' the camera setting and only display the image with the 16:9 crop.

As stated in the post from @Jeff Arola  if you crop the image in Camera Raw (or Lightroom) you should be able to restore the crop to the full frame 3:2.

"other apps shows as 2:3"- is to be expected as many other apps (that don't read the raw data and metadata) only show the embedded JPG preview in the raw file (ie. the image you see on the camera screen.)

Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 15.1.1, Photoshop 27.3.1, ACR 18.1.1, Lightroom 9.0, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 16.0.2 .

Could the Optics tab and camera lens profile corrections account for this?

Can you attach the XMP sidecar to a forum post? You will probably need to rename it from .xmp to .txt for the forum software to accept it.

Do you mean when Photoshop opens the Canon raw file into Adobe Camera Raw, or after Adobe Camera Raw opens the raw file into Photoshop? Both have a Crop tool, and they work differently.

If this is in Photoshop itself, do you mean the Crop tool is stuck on 16:9? If so, in the Crop tool options bar you can click the Clear button to go back to using any crop aspect ratio you want, as shown in the demo below.

Hi Conrad,

Thank you for responding. The crop happens before Adobe Camera Raw. I open the file (which in other apps shows as 2:3) and then when the Adobe Camera Raw dialoge screen opens the image has a 16:9 ratio. This all hapens automatically. And have no preset selected.

What model Canon camera do you have?

In camera raw if you go to the Crop panel are you able to uncrop it by using the Preset drop down list?

Hi Jeff,

Thank you for responding.

I use an Canon R6 camera. It produces full files in ratio 2:3. When I open the file in an other foto-app (like Irfanview) it shows the full image.  So the file is good.  This issue for me. Photoshop used to open files correctly, but this changed when I updated the Photoshop version.

I also think that the crop hapens automaticly in Camera Raw. Only in my version it does shof the crop tool in the side bar. Also the C shortcut does not work.

I'll try to understand the reason behind this, when I have more time.
