Have you tried targeting the layer mask you want to select part of and use Photoshop selection tools?

I’m not sure what you mean exactly.

What is giving you problems – making Selections or using Layer Masks or making Selections from Layer Masks or …?

And Selection saved as a Channel (and that includes Layer Masks) can be loaded again as a Selection (cmd-click the icon in the Channels Panel).

If one creates a Selection with the Rectangular Selection Tool et al. one can interest, subtract, add that wit a stored Selection by cmd-alt-shiift-clicking, cmd-alt-clicking, cmd-shiift-clicking the Channel’s icon in the Channels Panel.

Layer Masks can, as Ged Traynor pointed out, also be loaded as a Selection by cmd-clicking their icon in the Layers Panel instead of in the Channels Panel.

And Layers’ transparency can also similarly be loaded in the Layers Panel.
