How to fix bumpy edges in handwriting to create font?

Hello,

I'm trying to create a font using a scanned image of handwriting from an old letter. The problem is the edges of the ink are bumpy and don't look smooth and nice. I've tried selecting and modifying the selection to expand, smooth, and feather, but it still doesn't even out the edges. What can I do?
