Question

How to lock/snap Crop Tool borders to (not exceed) original image size when resizing crop area?

It is Photoshop CC by the way and the subject pretty much sums it up, but just to be perfectly clear:

How do I get the crop tool preview borders to permantely lock/snap to (not exceed) the outer borders of
the original image when resizing the crop area preview?

It seems that every solution or setting I have tried so far just temporary locks/snaps the crop to the image border. If I want to resize the crop (something I do practically every time, I'm almost never satisfied with my first cut) and fail to manually put the crop border exactly on the image border, it will either increase the canvas thus creating a background coloured or transparent exstension of the image or cut of a litlle strip of the original image.

So is there a way to permantly set the Crop Tool not to exceed the limits/borders of the original image (sorry for repeating myself, but it's driving me absolutely crazy)?

If it can't be done I would very much like to know that, too. I have spent far too much valuable time on this matter as it is.

Please try to make it short and to the point and please don't clog up the thread with far fetched solutions and workarounds. And yes; I do know about google and search engines, so please don't make me post my endless list of various search criteria and keywords in my fruitless quest for a solution.

Best regards,

Hello, is View > Snap To > Document Bounds unchecked? try to check it, see point 8 in https://blogs.adobe.com/jkost/2017/05/essential-tips-for-cropping-in-photoshop-cc.html

(I hope the answer is succint enough)

Thanks for the answer, but I tried that. A very helpful link with a lot of other good-to-know stuff though, so cheers mate!

Anyway, it feels like I have tried everything and anything from the very obvious to the far fetched and even obscure, and I don't think it is possible.

The Crop Tool borders snaps to the image border when you choose the crop tool, but will not snap back on the image border on resizing and if the crop border falls outside the image border it will extend the image and create a transparent area. Not much of a problem when you work with low resolution material, but in extreme high resolution you have to zoom in to infinity to notice.

This is a visual exaduration of the problem on a low res image by the way, it usually creates a barely visible stripe one or two pixels in width or height next to the image border:

This is a huge problem when working with high resolution immages.

I often work with PBS-size images, for example 11401x17101 at a 267 pixels/inch resolution, so it is really hard to hit the exact border and once the damage is done it is really hard to see that thin little extra one pixel wide or high line on the computer screen. I can assure you; It shows quite well when it is time to deliver and you blow the image up to the 10x8,1 feet (aprox, I'm metric) wall projection ordered by the paying customer.

So, there it is I suppose...
