How to make a gradient inside letters of a flattened JPG

I have a flattened JPG file (layers not available). I have wording that already has a mix of 3 gradient colors but I need to change them to something else. The blueish purple needs to be changed. I'd like to change the blueish purple and grey to what you see in the Haltech image, the yellow and orange and a touch of red inside the letters of Jims V-Twin. I've tried but its not doing what I want. I have CS5.1

There's also a black outline around each letter and that needs to stay.

I've made a copy of the PSD file you sent me to work with. I still don't understand what I need to click on tool wise to change the colors and try different colors. I turned off each layer one by one but none of them did what I wanted.

    Scott,

Please understand that all of us are here on the forum answering questions as volunteers because we love Photoshop. We are not here to teach the application, or to fix files for people. You have been provided a lot of help, including several ways to accomplished what you asked for. JJ very graciously gave you a PSD file to work with. You asked about changing colors of the gradient and said you couldn't get it right. The youtube tutorial I shared shows exactly how to edit a gradient. If you aren't able to follow the tutorial, I recommend you find a local school to take a Photoshop class.

    1. Duplicate the image layer and place a white layer below it.

    2. Choose the image layer and click on the layer to bring up Layer Style

    3. Use the Blend If command for a crisp elimination of the current inside of the letters.

(To eliminate the inside of the letters move the top right slider to the left until the area inside the letters are white.)

    4. Composite the image and white layers (Cmd+Opt+Shift+E)and duplicate the result

    5. Magic Wand set to Contiguous. Click on the outside white area.

    6. Select > Modify > Expand the Selection 2px. Then Edit > Fill with black

    7. Touch up outside are in black. It will be used as a Mask

    8. Add a gradation to a layer above, then return to the layer below.

    9. Select > All ... Edit > Copy

    10. Choose Gradation layer, add mask then Option click on mask. It will become white.

    11. Edit > Paste. The mask will be pasted into it.  Uncheck the layer below the gradation layer

You need a good selection of the letters to do what you want. Use the magic wand or quick select tool. This might be challenging and, it’s probably not going to work well at the bottom of the letters.

I suggest selecting the gradient, and the outside stroke. This will give you the cleanest possible selection.

Once you have the selection, add a gradient adjustment layer. The selection will become the layer mask for the gradient. Apply a stroke effect to the gradient layer to replace the outer stroke. You will have to change the stroke setting to “inside”.

Use the text layer as a clipping mask for your Gradient filed layer. Or add a layer style gardoent overlay

I think you misunderstood what I need. The JIMS V-TWIN inside colors is what needs to be changed, not the Haltech logo.

The colors you see inside the letters of JIMS V-TWIN is what needs to be changed. I'd like to see what a gradient of yellow, orange and red that you see in the Haltech would look inside the letters of JIMS V-TWIN
