Question

How to more precisely paint a section of an image/selection

I'm using Quick Mask with the paint brush (very soft edge - 0 ) and masking my car in the pic linked below.  I want to blur the background, however with the quick mask option to paint the car, the edges of the car and where that changes to background trees doesn't look very good.  I'm not sure if I need to use a different technique to select the car more precisely on the edges so that the end result doesn't look so bad?

You may find that it would be helpful if you chose one channel, in this case the Blue, for your Quick Mask painting guide. Work with a harder brush. as well. It may be softened over all or locally later, if desired.

You can use quick mask, but I would use a harder edge brush. The pen tool to make the selection would be better, in my opinion. To do the blurring, I would use lens blur, as it doesn't pull surrounding pixels in from beyond the mask, so you don't get that halo effect.

Thanks Chuck!  I tried the pen tool (curvature), but clearly I'm still not doing something right.  Here is my edit.  The edges of the car now look better using Lens blur as you recommended.  However I like how you have some of the ground still in focus above.  What area did you select actually?  Can you show that please?

Here's my edit (now the foreground grass is blurred, which is not quite what I wanted to do as the pic looks artificial now) - Shared album - Hameed Bhatti - Google Photos

Taking this a step further, using the pen tool will be very cumbersome on a different image such as this one where I want to blur everything other than the couple and the frame.  That's why I was using the brush with Quick Mask as its pretty easy to paint.  What would you recommend as the most efficient tool to accomplish what I want to for this pic?   https://photos.app.goo.gl/LarxdqIJxbzfAt7C3

Use whatever selection tool is easiest for the image that you have. Sometimes it's the pen tool, others times it's the quick selection tool. Create a mask of your selection, then modify it to create a depthmap, as I did in my sample. You can include the foreground if you want, so the grass is sharp, by using the gradient tool, and combining it's results with your previous selection, as I did with my sample.
