how to print a drawing and save to .dxf file

I'm making a drawing of a flat metal part to be made on a  plasma cutting machine.  I need to create a scaled drawing (only about 6x7"), print it to check the shape is correct, then save it in .dxf format.  I created a test drawing, but couldn't print (greyed out) and couln't save as a .dxf file.  So how do I print it and save as a .dxf ?
