Question

How to recreate a filter

Hi!

I've searched all over, but haven't been able to figure out a solution to the problem I'm having.

I have a Snapchat filter I like and I'm trying to determine what exact editing the filter adds (contrast, highlights, color hues, etc.). I assume the lens uses a color LUT, Is there a way of finding out what this filter adds to pictures? Any techniques or ways of determining this?

I've attached two pictures: one with no filter, and another with the filter I'm trying to recreate.

Theoretically, there are several ways that you could achieve this look.

If you select the Camera RAW filter.  You could use the Adjustment Brush to select an area.  Then simply desaturate that area.

Or in Camera RAW, use the HSL Adjustment setting... choose Saturation and then adjust the green.

But in Photoshop you can do this a million ways.  You just have to choose the option that you understand.

The two images are apparently not based on the same source material.

A rough approximation seems possible with two Adjustment Layers (Curves and Hue/Saturation).

Photoshop terminology may be a bit of a problem here:

Several of the Adjustments can be applied as Smart Filters, but they are not usually called »Filters« because they work pixel-by-pixel whereas the »proper« Filters can (though not all do) calculate the result for a pixel based on a number of other pixels.
