Question

how to separate an object into multiple layers?

I'm trying to split a portrait into a separate head layer, and a body layer, so I can apply different effects to the head and body. I have had no trouble creating separate layers that respectively contain the head and the body, but when I then display them at the same time, there is a tiny (like 1 pixel?) interface separating the head and the body, thus creating a visual gap. I made sure feathering was at 0 and anti-alias was turned off when selecting the head and body obects. How can I get them to appear together as a congruent person  when I display the 2 separate layers together? It's like something is causing a smoothing of the newly formed edge between the head and the body, and I can't find where it is to turn it off.

thanks

Copy Layer with Ctrl + J as many times as needed.

Mask out unwanted elements from layers as required.

It's usually best to overlap when compositing rather that trying to make each component butt to the one next to it.  It allows you to move, rotate and resize, but you do need to plan which element will be at the top of the layer stack.

It also may pay off with regard to certain Layer Styles if the Layers and their structure are supposed to simulate spatial relationships.

Could you please post a screenshot taken at View > 100% with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Channels, Options Bar, …) visible?

Why are you cutting without trapping (like extending the selection in the neck-area into the area of the head)?

View at 100% magnification before judging. Can you post screenshot please?

The first example is with using mask layers. The 2nd example is with putting the head and body into separate layers. As you can see, there's a U-shaped ring separating the head from the body regardless of the method, but it's more obvious using the mask layers for some reason.

So what am I doing wrong?

Most likely a transparency anti-aliasing display issue, even at 100% view?

To test, duplicate the image, flatten, view at 100%. If a display issue the line should disappear. If not, it may be an actual issue.
