How to trim an image using a clipping mask in Photoshop?

Hi there! I need to cut / trim an image, only one layer, to make its shape similar to the shape of another layer. I tried to do it using a clipping mask, but I couldn't cut the image, just managed to "hide" the exceeding part of it. Is there any way to cut a single layer using the shape of another layer? Thank you very, very much ♥

Either a layer mask or a clipping mask could work, the latter depends on the layer structure so a sample file or screenshot of the layers panel is needed to illustrate.

Why is »Hiding« not enough?

What are you trying to achieve?

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible?

You could load the tarnsparency of a Layer by ctrl-clicking its icon in the Layers Panel, Select > Invert and delete on another Layerr but I doubt that is necessary.
