You have example above. If you want to recolor only one part of layer then create blank new layer and clip it to drawing layer. With blank new layer selected press Alt + Ctrl + G. Activate Brush tool and paint on blank new layer in area where is element which you want to recolor.

Could you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Channels, Options Bar, …) visible? 

 

If the elements are on a Layer of their own clipping mask a Solid Color Layer to that Layer and apply a Layer Mask to limit its effect to the pertinent regions.
