Images out of proportion when opened (see attachment)

PS updated last night, and now when I open a new image - it stretches out of proportion horizontally. If I want to see it in the correct proportion - I have to shrink it down to a tiny image.
I'm sure it's just a setting, but how do I fix it? (It's fine in Preview, but stretched in PhotoShop.)

As well as the good advice from c.pfaffenbichler you may want to check View > Pixel Aspect Ratio and Pixel Aspect Ratio correction. It should normally be set to square pixels and no correction.

 

If that, and the previous advice posted, does not work then try resetting your preferences (Preferences > Genera > Reset Preferences on quit,  then click OK and close and restart Photoshop). The preference files contain more than just the user set preferences and, if corrupt, can lead to strange behaviour which sometimes does not show up until a new version is installed.

    Thanks. This was the fix: 

     

    "turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences (Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Graphic Processor Settings) and restarting Photoshop" fixed it. Adobe says it may have something to do with the M1 chip. (?)

    Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences (Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Graphic Processor Settings) and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue? 

    Does turning on »Deactivate Native Canvas« (Photoshop > Preferences > Technology Previews) and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

        Unfortunately disabling GPU usage is not a proper solution as it invalidates GPU dependent features (like the Rotate View Tool, 3D Features and some Filter acceleration for example).
