images placed with automatic backgrounds

I am trying to place images on a blank background in photoshop, but instead the images are being created automatically as their own layers with their own backgrounds.  How do I stop this apparent automatic process?

Jain, thank you for your response. But I think there is a misunderstanding. Yes, I have a transparent background layer upon which I want to place images. But when I click on “place embedded”, the image is automatically created as a new background layer. I want it to stop doing that. I want to click on “place embedded” and have the image appear in the transparent background as it should. So how do I get it to stop automatically creating a second background layer?

Okay, there may be a Preferences setting that is causing this problem. In this screen video, you can see how it's working correctly for me. Have you tried to reset your Preferences, or any other troubleshooting steps? If you drag an image onto the blank layer, does it place properly? What about if you paste into the layer?

Hi @Wspmn73, Is your blank background layer transparent? If so, you can do this with File > Place Embedded. Otherwise, if you have a solid color or other type of layer with pixels, adding an image will create a new layer on top of that.
