Import from Camera Raw as smart object - PS2021 lags

Hi all,

as many other people I'm experiencing slow and sluggish behaviour in PS2021 (22.1.1, Windows 10), especially when toggling layers on/off which takes several seconds. It's running smooth in PS2019, so I don't believe my hardware is the reason.

Now - by chance - I found that the sluggish behaviour only occurs when I import from ACR as a smart object. If the image is imported as a flat layer, everything is running fine (as far as I can judge for now). How can this be? Importing as 8 or 16 bit makes no difference.

If this is a solution to the the sluggish performance, I can live with it, although I sometimes like to go back to ACR for tweaking instead of using ACR as a filter (which would introduce another smart object).

Are there any settings related to smart object behaviour...?

While I do have issues with Windows 10 and Photoshop 2021 versions. I can not state I have the issues you seem to have. Yes there is a 4 second lag for before ACR 13.1 UI to opens and a 4 second lag when ACR create a Smart Object layer with its RAW conversion. I can not state my Mockup scripts that replace or Edit Smart Object layer's content perform slower in Photoshop 22.x. I do not normally see any lag when I toggle a layer visibility.  You Issues may not a hardware issue but could be with the software that support your hardware. Adobe changes its GPU support in Photoshop 2021. Some older GPU are no longer supported, some are of limited use, and others do not meet Photoshop 2021 requirements.  Make sure your GPU's device driver is the latest available one from its manufacturer and if you have a Nvidia GPU install the Studio device driver not the gaming device driver.  Also review known issues in version 22 some of the known issues have been addressed in 22.1.1  others have not been addressed and are there reported ins Adobe introduced in Photoshop 22.  Use Photoshop version 21.2.4 till the issues in 22 are addressed by Adobe/

Thanks for the explanation, JJMack. Of course I checked all those FAQs and to-do-lists, and nothing helped so far. All  drivers are up-to-date, the Nvidia SD driver is installed, and GPU is recognized correctly. 21.2.4 isn't much better, while CC2019  is running smoothly. Seems to remain a mystery... 😬

Are you now stating you also have issues in Photosop 2020 version 21.2.4 that only Photoshop 2019 version 20.0.1 works well? Are you using Adobe ACR 13.1 with Photoshop 2019 as well as 2020 and 2021?
