Question

importing a pgn

Hi I'm designing templates for my photo booth, basically a photo strip.  The first layer is a chosen background with simple white rectangles added to assist with placement when I upload the template but my problem is the second layer.  I need to import images that I have saved a pgn files but when I upload them to the layer they aren't transparent, I can still see the checkered background.  Basically I'm a novice and haven't a clue what I'm doing apart from watching lots of videos and being no clearer, oh and screeming, lots of screeming.  Help

There have been issues with vector stock art that are supposed to be transparent but require raster effects to complete their look like with a glow. The designers of those image use the actual checkered background to simulate where the transparency is, but you need to replace the gray squares with your own background. Here's a thread from the Illustrator forum with some info that might help Shutterstock images and 'transparent' backgrounds. HELP PLEASE You might want to download the vector version and remove the checkered background in Illustrator.

Do you really mean a PGN file? I wasn't familiar with it, so I looked it up. The best I could find was that it's a type of TIFF file with lossless compression but is obsolete and was supported by Picatinny Arsenal Electronic Formstore or for Portable Game Notation files. Or do you mean PNG, which is more likely. PNG stands for Portable Network Graphic and is much more common and supports transparency. Here is a list of supported file formats Supported file formats in Photoshop. If you do mean PGN, then not being a supported file type could be the problem. But if you really mean PNG, we may need more information.

When you say you still see the checkered background, that means it is transparent. So if you are wanting transparency, it's not clear what the issue is. Maybe you could show a screenshot or provide some more details.

    Hi Myra,

thanks for your reply.  I thought that I might be able to see the image that is on the transparent background without the checkered part to see where it was placed over the layer below.  Is this not possible?

    Thanks again

So wait,  the checkered background is behind the image when you placed it on top of another image? Did you grab the png from the internet? It could be a screenshot or something like that of an image that would normally have a transparent background. Because that would normally not show up

    Hi

I'd imagine the checkered background you are seeing is in fact a transparent background

The PNG format is not obsolete and is useful for use on websites.
