Increased canvas size is white instead of transparent

When I increase the canvas size, I get a white border around my image instead of a transparent border. How do I get a transparent border?

Try double clicking your background Layer to make it editable first.

Then go ahead and adjust the canvas size.

Create a new layer with nothing in it, and select it before adding Canvas size.

Or click the lock icon on the Background layer to make it an ordinary layer.
